New Goodwill Programs Find Jobs for Vets and Dislocated Workers
The GW Vets and Dislocated Worker Programs Target People Affected by the Recession
Recently, Goodwill Industries of Greater New York and Northern New Jersey inaugurated two programs to provide job preparation and placement services for U.S. Veterans and other people affected by the economic downturn. The GW Vets and Dislocated Worker Programs are funded by the New York City Department of Small Business Services through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act.

To qualify, Veterans must have low or no income and present their certificate of release from active duty (DD 214.) Goodwill’s Dislocated Worker program assists individuals who were terminated, laid-off, or formerly self-employed; are no longer supported by a family member; or their former employer closed or relocated.

The Goodwill Programs provide career counseling and job readiness assistance. Services include resume preparation; mock interviews; cover letter preparation; access to computers, telephones and fax machines; and job development and placement assistance primarily focused in the Healthcare industry.

“Certified Nurse Assistants, Emergency Medical Technicians, Medical Assistants, and Residential Counselors are some of the positions in demand,” notes Program Director John Maul. “Funding to provide other training is available too.” Mr. Maul, who previously worked as Goodwill’s Workforce1 operations coordinator, is a U.S. Veteran. He came to Goodwill in June 2004.

Goodwill has partnered with Opportunities for a Better Tomorrow and Brooklyn Workforce Innovations to place dislocated workers.
