Internship Fair 2009 Success Story

When I returned to my Vocational school the next day, which is Joseph M. Barry Career and Technical school which is located in Westbury N. Y., I spoke to my teacher assistant, Mrs. Gabrini, who helped me make phone calls to the other teacher that helps students when they are ready to obtain an internship in that field. When I met with Mrs. O’ Moore later that day, I explained to her how I got this business card and the application from one of the managers at the Job Fair that was held at the Huntington Hilton the night before. Later on that month, I called Mr. Butcher up to confirm that he received my paperwork. Mr. Butcher then set-up an appointment for interview for a week later.

On Tuesday February 3, 2009, I had my interview with Mr. Butcher at Long Island Press. Mrs. Gabrini and Mrs. O’ Moore came with me for support as this was my very first interview. Mrs. O’ Moore said that I was able to work for one day a week from 9:30 am-1:45pm there. After the interview Mr. Butcher told us that I got the internship and I became really excited about the idea of starting to work there. Mr. Butcher asked Mrs. Gabrini what day would be the best day to start there and we agreed on Tuesday, February 24th.

On Tuesday, February 24, 2009, I started my internship at Long Island Press. When I got there I had to sign in and meet with Mr. Butcher who was going to tell me what I was going to do for the day. I worked on a lot of different things like entering the data into the computer using Microsoft Excel, I also learned how to crop pictures using Adobe Photoshop and I learned to save it to the web, I learned how to insert articles and photos into the pages of the newspaper and layout the pages for the paper.

During my internship there I was asked if I wanted to help out at the Green Living Expo in Brentwood. I was there all day Saturday and Sunday and it was really a lot of fun even though it was really busy. I helped out at many of the venues there doing a variety of jobs that were assigned to me. Just like the internship at Long Island Press the Green Expo was a great experience to have an opportunity like that.

I have been working there for ten weeks so far and I really enjoy working there with all of my co-workers and Mr. Butcher. I'm really happy that Mrs. Gabrini worked with me to get this, it was a dream come true to get this internship at Long Island Press.
