LI Works Opens its Doors to Baldwin Students

Because of Catherine’s interest in journalism, LI Works connected her to the editor of Star Community Publishing Group, where she spent time learning about the job of editor, meeting other staff, and even walking away with a real assignment—write an article from a student’s perspective about Britney Spears or about the presidential race.  (Catherine’s articles appeared in This Week newspaper on Sunday, March 2).  Kathleen was able to interview an architect by phone due to her interest in that specific career.

According to Lisa Strahs-Lorenc, Director of Community Relations, “It was such a pleasure to host such mature and interested students.  They were encouraged to interview the staff of the organization and create a career portfolio.  They also participated in a focus group to give feedback about what they would like to see offered in the way of courses about careers.  Baldwin High School should be very proud of these students who represented their school so well.

The Long Island Works Coalition is a non-profit organization that builds collaborative relationships among employers, workers, and the educational community (kindergarten through college). It is an inclusive organization that helps to prepare today’s students for Long Island’s workforce.
